Kenya Was Always This Big
The United Nations has backed a world-map reform that restores Africa’s true visual scale. Kenya gains no territory and loses none. But a different map can change how Europeans understand its size, distances and place in the world.
On 4 September, the United Nations General Assembly backed the “Correct the Map” resolution by 164 votes to one, with six abstentions. It encourages the use of Equal Earth and other maps that preserve the true relative size of land areas.
The familiar Mercator projection was designed for navigation. Its geometry enlarges places increasingly as they approach the poles. That is why Europe, Greenland and northern North America look much larger relative to equatorial regions than they really are.
Kenya itself does not become larger. Using current United Nations surface-area data, it covers about 592,000 square kilometres — roughly 1.65 times Germany’s total area. What changes is how that fact looks on the page.
Kenya world map debates can sound abstract. This one is unusually easy to explain.
Kenya did not become larger this week. It was always this large.
What changed was the map.
On 4 September, the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly backed a non-binding resolution encouraging governments, schools, international organisations and technology companies to use world maps that preserve the true relative size of countries and continents.
The initiative, led by Togo and supported by African states, specifically promotes the Equal Earth projection as an alternative to the familiar Mercator world map.
A map projection is simply a mathematical method for transferring the curved surface of the Earth onto a flat sheet or screen.
That cannot be done perfectly. Every flat world map distorts something: area, shape, distance, direction — or several of them at once.
Equal Earth chooses to preserve area. If one country is twice the area of another on the globe, it also occupies twice the area on the map. Shapes are not perfect, but relative size is.
That makes the debate much more interesting than “old map wrong, new map right.”
Mercator was not a failed map. It was a successful tool for a specific job. The historical problem came when a navigation map became one of the default pictures through which generations learned the political size of the world.
Mercator solved a navigation problem — and created a perception problem
Gerardus Mercator developed his projection in 1569. Its great advantage for sailors was that a constant compass bearing could be plotted as a straight line. For navigation, that was revolutionary.
The mathematical price is severe area distortion. As a place moves farther north or south from the equator, it appears increasingly enlarged.
Greenland is the famous example: on many Mercator maps it seems comparable in size to Africa, although Africa is roughly fourteen times larger.
Kenya sits close to the equator. Its apparent area is therefore far less inflated by Mercator than countries at northern European latitudes.
Put differently: Mercator does not really “shrink Kenya” in isolation. It enlarges many countries farther north, making Kenya look smaller by comparison.
Equal Earth, introduced by cartographers Bojan Šavrič, Tom Patterson and Bernhard Jenny in 2018, is an equal-area projection.
That means the relative areas shown on the map are mathematically preserved. It was designed to combine that accuracy with continental shapes that remain visually familiar.
A country Europeans routinely imagine too small
Current United Nations data give Kenya a total surface area of about 591,958 square kilometres.
Different statistical sources sometimes quote smaller figures because they use land area, excluding inland water, rather than total surface area.
The important rule is to compare like with like.
Germany’s total area is about 357,683 square kilometres.
On that comparable basis, Kenya is roughly 1.65 times the size of Germany.
That single comparison changes several conversations.
A national road programme in Kenya is operating across a country substantially larger than Germany. A national school system has to serve communities spread across almost 600,000 square kilometres.
Public health, electricity, mobile networks, water infrastructure and emergency response all confront distances that can disappear mentally when Kenya is seen as a small patch on a conventional world map.
This does not mean size automatically creates importance. Russia is enormous; Singapore is tiny.
Political power, wealth, population, institutions, technology and geography interact in much more complicated ways.
But inaccurate visual scale can obscure the physical constraints within which a country operates.
How big is Kenya really?
Why it matters: the map does not enlarge Kenya. It removes the visual inflation applied to many countries farther from the equator. Surface-area figures are rounded from current United Nations data for Kenya and German official statistics.
What the familiar map encourages us to forget
Africa’s surface area is about 29.65 million square kilometres in current United Nations statistics.
Germany’s total area is about 358,000 square kilometres; Kenya’s is about 592,000.
For an individual Kenyan country, the Equal Earth effect is therefore less about a dramatic change in its own outline than about context.
Northern countries stop being visually inflated around it.
This is why the change matters at continental scale.
Africa does not acquire territory. Europe and North America do not lose any. The visual relationship simply becomes proportional to actual surface area.
Distance is policy
Kenya’s physical scale helps explain why national policy can look very different from Nairobi.
The country stretches from the Indian Ocean through densely populated highlands to arid and semi-arid northern counties; from the Lake Victoria basin in the west to the Somali border in the east.
Climate, settlement density, infrastructure and economic activity vary dramatically across that space.
When AFRICA3000 writes about drought in northern Kenya, flooding in Nairobi, agriculture in the highlands, transport through Mombasa or communities around Lake Victoria, these are not neighbourhood variations inside a compact state.
They are geographically distinct systems inside a large country.
A more realistic Kenya world map therefore does not merely satisfy cartographic fairness. It can improve intuition.
The cost of connecting a school, maintaining a road, moving food or deploying emergency services is partly a function of distance.
A reader who underestimates the physical scale of Kenya may also underestimate the logistical problem.
Do distorted maps make Africa politically smaller?
This is where the argument needs restraint.
Supporters of “Correct the Map” argue that the long dominance of Mercator has helped reinforce a world view in which Europe and North America appear visually larger and Africa smaller.
Togo’s foreign minister has explicitly connected the campaign to dignity, equality and global perception.
It is plausible that maps help shape what scholars call our mental geography — the internal picture we carry of where places are, how large they are and how they relate to one another.
But a stronger claim — that Mercator caused European political dominance or contemporary foreign-policy attitudes toward Africa — would be much harder to establish.
Maps interact with history. They do not explain it by themselves.
AFRICA3000 would therefore draw a narrower conclusion:
Maps do not create power, but they help create the mental world in which power is imagined.
A classroom wall map, television graphic or digital interface repeated over decades becomes part of the background against which “large”, “central”, “remote” and “important” are unconsciously understood.
Correcting area distortion does not redistribute political power. It removes one unnecessary visual distortion from that background.
There is no perfectly neutral flat map
Equal Earth deserves the same scrutiny as Mercator.
It preserves relative area, but shapes and distances are still distorted because a globe cannot be flattened without compromise.
The projection also cannot answer political questions such as which region sits in the centre of the page, whether north is placed at the top, how borders are drawn or which names are used.
Those are design and political choices rather than consequences of the equal-area mathematics itself.
That matters because “the new true map” would be an overstatement.
Equal Earth is more truthful about area. It is not a perfect two-dimensional copy of a sphere.
The United Nations resolution is also non-binding. It does not ban Mercator.
Mercator remains useful for navigation and for many web-mapping applications at local scales.
The resolution instead encourages institutions to stop using a strongly area-distorting projection when the purpose is to show the relative size of the world’s regions.
No new land. A different frame.
Kenya’s borders do not move. Its gross domestic product does not rise because a map changes.
Its population, coastline and natural resources are identical on 7 September to what they were before the United Nations vote.
So what might change?
First, education. A child learning from an equal-area world map receives a more accurate visual intuition about the physical scale of Kenya and Africa relative to Europe and North America.
Second, media. News graphics and explainer maps that preserve area can make regional comparisons less misleading.
Third, international perception. Africa’s enormous land area, ecological variety and infrastructure distances become visually harder to underestimate.
And fourth, Kenya’s own geographic story.
The country can be understood not as a small East African space dominated by Nairobi on the mental map, but as a large state whose physical geography helps explain different development needs across counties.
The United Nations vote will not transform Kenya’s geopolitical weight. A map cannot manufacture prosperity, democratic institutions or strategic influence.
But representation matters precisely because it is usually invisible.
Most people do not calculate the area of countries when they look at a world map. They simply absorb the picture.
For centuries, one of the most familiar pictures presented northern regions at a visual scale they did not possess relative to equatorial ones.
That was not a conspiracy embedded in Mercator’s mathematics. It was the consequence of using a navigation projection for purposes it was not designed to serve.
Correcting that does not require pretending cartography can be politically neutral or perfectly accurate.
It requires choosing the distortion appropriate to the question.
If the question is how large the world’s countries and continents are relative to one another, an equal-area map gives the better answer.
And for Kenya, perhaps the most useful lesson is almost embarrassingly simple:
Kenya did not become larger. Europe simply stopped being enlarged around it.
For European readers, this is more than an African campaign about representation.
Europe needs accurate geography too.
European debates about infrastructure, migration, climate adaptation, conservation, security and development repeatedly depend on assumptions about distance and scale in African countries.
A realistic visual understanding of Kenya will not tell Europeans what policies to support.
It will make one common error less likely: underestimating the physical space across which those policies have to work.
That is a modest achievement. But good maps should be modest.
Their job is not to tell us what to think about a country. Their job is to help us see where — and how large — it actually is.
Schools and atlases: Whether governments and publishers begin replacing Mercator-style general world maps with Equal Earth or other equal-area projections.
Digital maps: Whether major technology and mapping companies respond to the United Nations resolution in global overview maps while retaining projection choices suited to local navigation.
African Union: How the African Union develops the Correct the Map campaign beyond the United Nations vote.
Kenyan education: Whether Kenyan school materials or public institutions explicitly adopt equal-area world maps.
The debate itself: Whether advocates distinguish carefully between correcting area distortion and making broader claims about historical or political causation.
